Center for Bloodless Care
The Center for Bloodless Care is dedicated to respect a patient's request for blood conservation and provide the option of non-blood medical and surgical management.
At Vassar Brothers Medical Center, we are committed to meeting the specialized needs of our patients, including those who prefer or require options for bloodless (no blood transfusion) therapy. Our commitment is to provide quality care with state-of-the-art equipment and highly skilled teams of surgeons, anesthesiologists, physicians, nurses, technicians, and healthcare support personnel who fully understand and support bloodless medical and surgical care.
WHAT IS BLOODLESS CARE?
The Center for Bloodless Care at Vassar Brothers Medical Center is for patients who wish to avoid the use of donor blood or donor primary blood components (red cells, white cells, platelets, or plasma) during medical or surgical procedures. The program endeavors to maximize your own production of cells, and to minimize blood loss by utilizing special blood conservation methods.
There are many reasons you may prefer a bloodless or "transfusion-free" treatment method. You may hold a religious conviction that prevents you from receiving blood transfusions. Or you might feel more comfortable knowing that with bloodless techniques, you virtually eliminate the risk of bloodborne illnesses.
This is not just a promise from one physician not to use blood. At Vassar Brothers Medical Center, our technology combined with our team of highly skilled physicians, surgeons, nurses, and entire patient care staff provide the highest quality medical care possible - without blood transfusions. We have made a commitment to uphold the informed decision of those who desire bloodless medical treatment. All of the physicians participating in this program desire to help individuals requesting non-blood medical and surgical management.
TREATMENT OF MINORS
We certainly respect the concerns of parents wishing to avoid transfusions of donor blood for their children. We will explore with you options for treatment and work with you to meet that goal. However, please realize that state and federal law may impose limitations on withholding blood for minors in a life-or-death situation.
We want you to have peace of mind. We wish to assure you that as you participate in this program you will be treated with respect and dignity.
