Serving over 140,000 people across the Mid-Hudson Valley, Northern Dutchess Hospital is a 68-bed acute care, non-profit hospital providing a comprehensive range of emergency, medical and surgical services.
Our medical staff includes more than 280 practitioners offering expert healthcare in fields including orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, emergency medicine, anesthesia/pain management, pediatrics, cardiology, internal medicine, family practice, ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, psychology, psychiatry, pulmonology, oncology, urology, acute rehabilitation and plastic surgery.
Support and diagnostic services include physical and occupational therapy, laboratory and pathology, nutritional counseling, sleep studies, respiratory care, medical social work, diagnostic radiology, cardiac rehabilitation, cardio-neuro diagnostics, pharmacy, speech/language pathology, podiatry and primary vision care.
Bone and Joint Center Northern Dutchess Hospital’s comprehensive, orthopedic program incorporates a wide array of services on one campus. Our multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists and technologists offer patients a complete and easily accessible course for treatment. Services include:

Frederick S. Zipser Surgical Center
Providing inpatient and outpatient surgical services, the Zipser Surgical Center features a broad spectrum of high-tech equipment in five operating suites, including a new OR dedicated to minimally invasive, laparoscopic surgery. The Center also features a family waiting area, eight-bed Post Anesthesia Care Unit, a seventeen-bed Ambulatory Surgical wing featuring a pediatric pre– and post– surgery area, pain management procedure room and endoscopy suite.
Our cutting edge equipment includes advanced laparoscopic pieces designed to aid in minimally invasive gynecological and abdominal surgeries, Instatrack surgical navigation technology for sinus surgeries, and state-of-the-art computerized, total knee and total hip replacement equipment. This equipment allows for quicker surgeries and procedures, reduces anesthesia time, enables surgeons to make smaller incisions, creates more precise instrument placement and essentially leads to faster recovery for patients.
Nasal and Sinus Center
With expert physicians and the latest technology in minimally invasive sinus surgery equipment, Northern Dutchess Hospital offers complete ear, nose and throat care. Conditions treated include sinus pain, allergies, ear and throat infections, thyroid problems, headaches and vision problems.
Neugarten Family Birth Center
Opened in 1985 as the first hospital-based birthing center in New York State, the Neugarten Family Birth Center delivers more than 770 babies each year. Our multidisciplinary team of physicians, midwives, nurses, anesthesiologists and staff work together to provide a high level of sophisticated medical care in a setting that is aesthetically pleasing and conducive to family-centered care. Pain management options and an operating suite for Cesarean births are available.
Mother and baby education is available throughout the entire course of pregnancy and beyond including pregnancy exercise class, lactation services, mother and baby exercise, pregnancy exercise, sibling class, childbirth class, car seat safety checks and infant CPR. Through this state-of-the-art center, our goal is to continue the tradition of providing the very best care for you and your baby by creating a unique and memorable birthing experience.
The Birth Center received 5 stars through Health Grades for Maternity care (www.healthgrades.com), placing the Center among the top 10% in the nation.
Women’s View A Vision of Health
Women’s View encompasses a full range of diagnostic, medical and wellness services for women and brings together a highly specialized team of physicians, therapists and clinicians who are dedicated to providing the highest quality of care in a convenient setting. Services are designed to address the complex physical and emotional needs specific to women and are offered in private and state-of-the-art treatment areas at the Hospital and Women’s View Montgomery Street Health Annex.

Emergency Department
The state-of-the-art Northern Dutchess Hospital Emergency Department– nearly triple in size of the previous ED– features all private rooms, a high-tech treatment and observation suite, a decontamination/isolation room, a sophisticated video surveillance system, and several other specialty treatment suites. The ED also features a fully appointed waiting area, a centralized triage area, bedside registration, a dedicated physician consultation room and dedicated and separate entrances for patients walking in or arriving by ambulance.
Northern Dutchess Hospital’s Emergency Department is the first hospital in Dutchess County to install a completely electronic medical record system. This innovative system tracks the
status of care for every patient, from arrival to discharge—enhancing efficiency and safety every step of the way. The wireless system features plasma screen monitoring, allowing
clinicians to immediately view lab orders, x-rays and bed availability. It allows physicians, nurses and staff to communicate with greater ease. Also, prescriptions and paperwork are all printed
electronically. These benefits result in reduced patient waiting time and a reduced chance for error.
Medical Imaging Department
The Medical Imaging staff is accredited and certified, meeting and surpassing all commonly accepted standards. The finest modern equipment is used and Board Certified Radiologists interpret the examinations. Services include:

Dyson Center for Women’s Imaging
The Dyson Center for Women’s Imaging is an integral part of the Women’s View concept. The center offers mammography, image-guided breast biopsy, sonography/ultrasound and bone mineral density testing. Patients receive state-of-the-art services from experts trained in women’s imaging. The design of the center is beautiful, private and tranquil, with the goal to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable throughout their procedure.
Sosnoff Cardio Diagnostic Center
The center, housed in new space of the Paul Rosenthal Pavilion, features an accredited echocardiogram laboratory program with sophisticated testing, including transesophageal echocardiograms, stress echocardiograms, nuclear stress testing, routine EKG’s and neurological testing (EEG’s and EMG’s). Adjacent to the center is the Northern Dutchess Hospital Laboratory/Pathology suite, providing easy access for outpatients and an efficient internal flow of service for inpatients.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services
Paul Rosenthal Rehabilitation Center
The Center provides state-of-the-art, comprehensive acute inpatient rehabilitation to patients who have suffered from stroke, brain injury, degenerative neurological disorders, orthopedic impairments, joint replacements, multiple traumas and fractures. Featuring mostly private rooms, all with private baths, flat-screen televisions and beautiful appointments, the unit serves patients who are referred to the program by a physician and are evaluated to determine if they qualify for the treatment program.
The Center has been accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), representing the highest level of accreditation awarded to rehabilitation facilities. An organization receiving this accreditation has put itself through a rigorous peer review process and has demonstrated that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable and accountable.
Outpatient Rehabilitation
Services are offered through the Paul Rosenthal Rehabilitation Center, as well as Hyde Park Physical Medicine Center. The Physical Therapy Department treats such acute and chronic conditions as neck, back and foot pain, post-injury and post-surgery, sprains and strains, arthritis, problems of weakness and disorders of balance.
The Occupational Therapy Department provides treatment to individuals of all ages with a variety of disorders involving the upper extremities such as arthritis, fractures, tendon and nerve injury, CVA or head injury, shoulder pain tendonitis and Lymphedema. NDH staffs two Certified Hand Therapists and staff also has specialized training in Lymphedema management. The focus is on function and staff will work with patients to achieve independence.
Hyde Park Physical Medicine Center
The Center houses private treatment rooms and advanced exercise and treatment equipment that enable our Physical and Occupational Therapists to provide the highest level of care. Orthopedic diagnoses treated include all musculoskeletal injuries, sports medicine injuries, arthritic conditions and injuries involving hand and fine motor skills. Neurological diagnoses treated include Parkinson’s disease, Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal cord injuries and Multiple Sclerosis. One of the two NDH Certified Hand Therapists is also available in the Hyde Park location.
Short-term Rehabilitation at The Thompson House
Rehabilitation services at The Thompson House include the treatment of orthopedic, neurological, neuromuscular and arthritic disorders. The injury of the resident or patient determines the specific type of therapy prescribed. An attending physician is available, as well medical consultants that are called in as needed. Skilled nursing care, referrals to home care as appropriate and all physical, speech and occupational therapies are available.
The Amputee Program is a post operative, pre-prosthetic cycle of service that is getting the attention of several doctors for its quality of care and convenience for patients. After a surgery, patients who are amputees may come to The Thompson House for initial treatment and prosthetic measurement. Once the patient is ready for more intense physical rehabilitation with the prosthetic, he/she is then transferred to the Paul Rosenthal Rehabilitation Center in preparation to return home.
Speech Language Pathology Department
The department provides inpatient and outpatient services for patients of all ages, with a focus on speech development, strained or hoarse voice, difficulty saying particular sounds, stuttering and disorders due to stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, radiation treatments or neurological diseases. Evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders are also available and may include a modified barium swallow study.
Sleep Studies Lab
More than fifty million Americans are plagued with some form of chronic sleep or wake disorder. Under the supervision of board certified physicians and registered Polysomnographers, the Sleep Studies Lab diagnoses and treats patients suffering from sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, snoring and other forms of sleep disorders. Set in a hotel-like room, patients spend the night while technicians monitor breathing, snoring, sleep stages and oxygen levels. After just one night’s visit, a physician is often able to diagnose the condition and immediately prescribe a treatment plan.
Outpatient Nutritional Counseling
Northern Dutchess Hospital offers a full spectrum of outpatient nutritional services for both adults and children. Patients are also often referred by physicians for metabolic syndrome, elevated blood sugar, and gastrointestinal problems (Crohn’s, colitis, IBS, Celiac Disease). Services include:
- Weight loss and healthy eating
- Nutrition for healthy aging
- Sports nutrition
- Personalized counseling for diabetes education
- Nutritional counseling for patients with eating disorders
- Nutritional counseling for arthritis and fibromyalgia
- Reducing blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels

Northern Dutchess Hospital Wellness Center
The Wellness Center offers nearly 3,000 square feet of exercise and weight training equipment, group exercise classes such as Tai Chi, Pilates and strength training and the option of personal training. Specialized, interdisciplinary programs include Adult and Adolescent weight loss programs in conjunction with the Nutrition department.
Since 1994 the Center has also been home to a Cardiac Rehabilitation program. This outpatient program is designed to help those who have experienced a heart attack, had open heart surgery or angioplasty or those who have high blood pressure or other risk factors for heart disease. The program is rehabilitative, preventative and educational.
